Mica Monocle

This piece was born slowly. I have always gravitated toward the technical- an extra screw, a hinge, a pressure fit… The mica monocle grew from the lens out. The lens, which is a thin sheet of Mica, is pressure fit in slotted wire and held together by a hidden hand tapped screw that is the handle meeting the lens rod. The cradle for the hand piece catches the lens with a click.

The desire to bring life into the inanimate is the main underlying theme in my pieces. Whether a piece can move on its own, or be utilized and interacted with, the movement and mechanics are of the utmost importance to me. Automata, clocks, and anatomical joints inspire my sculpture and wearable jewelry and keep me excited about the endless possibilities in design and construction in the realm of metals.
